A tale of personal quest for a clean environment

Being The Change You Wish To Be

A tale of personal quest for a clean environment

Abdul was just 10 years old when he became aware about the harmful effects of plastic. In a reminiscence of Dr. Haim Ginott’s famous quote, “Children are like wet cement. Whatever falls on them makes an impression”, Abdul made his personal quest to stop the use of plastic bags. Abdul’s imagined of an extremely innovative idea – trade the plastic bags in lieu of bags made out of discarded newspapers! An indeed novel idea.

NRI of the Year 2014, Academics (Middle East)

“I thought if bags can be made out of anything, why not paper bags?”

By quoting Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to be”, Abdul started this change by making paper bags and distributing them to the local grocery stores. In the few years since, Abdul made more than 6000 paper bags, thereby spreading awareness of the harmful effects of plastic. What began as a hobby, soon turned into a community campaign with Abdul demonstrating the making of paper bags in the workshops organised at schools, companies and government offices. His idea was soon adopted by his school, many food stores and companies in Abu Dhabi.

One of the biggest recognition of his efforts came in the way of him becoming the youngest ever and only the 2nd asian to receive Abu Dhabi Award (2011), the highest civilian award, from Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahayan. Abdul has also been invited by United Nations Environment Program to deliver the centre stage speech to over 1400 children attendees from over 104 countries. Fondly known as the Newspaper Boy, Abdul has also been invited by Waste Management Abu Dhabi to attend World Future Energy Summit in 2012 & 2013.

“I believe if you have something good in your mind, convert it into action, then only you can change the world and serve the community.”
